Pinellas County was part of Hillsborough until a referendum was passed calling for the separation on January 1, 1912. HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY PINELLAS COUNTY!
Pinellas County was derived from the Spanish words punto de pinos which means point of pines.
Early occupants were Tocobaga Indians, Calusa Indians (as evidenced by various mounds found along the coastline), Spanish explorers, pioneer farmers and fishermen, real estate speculators, tourists, retirees and folds who love living on the Suncoast.
Pinellas is the most densely populated county in Florida with 3,339 people per square mile. There are 24 municipalities, Clearwater is the county seat, St. Petersburg is the largest city, and Tarpon Springs was the first city to be incorporated. Pinellas is Floridas second smallest county in land mass 38 miles long and 15 miles at its broadest point with 587 miles of coastline.
Pinellas County Park Department offers 4,242 acres of the most beautiful examples of pristine Florida landscapes, sun drenched beaches (with 2 of the top ten beaches in the nation Fort DeSoto and Caladesi Island Park), tranquil lakes, lush expanses of native habitat along with playgrounds and learning centers.
